Prototyping invites and reminders

Some rapid prototyping to help us explore our next big service iteration.

I got to do some quick and dirty prototyping work this week. We want to add invites and reminders to the service. This will initially be used to send text messages to pregnant people to tell them that they are due a vaccination.

Our user researcher had gathered lots of user needs, and we worked together to flesh out a screen flow map to explore what it might look like if we added the following features to the prototype…

  • send messages to eligible groups of patients
  • view and manage message templates
  • view a history of messages that have been sent
  • manually update a patient's details if they've been contacted via a different method (e.g. a telephone call)

I enjoyed getting stuck into a big piece of work. The journey includes 17 different screens so far so it's much bigger than anything I've been involved with so far, which have generally been small iterations to 1 or 2 pages.

I think the prototype will be useful to help the wider team scope out the work and get a feel for the technical complexity. I'm hoping that next week we'll be able to decide on how big we want to go for this first slice of functionality, then I can focus on refining that bit of the prototype.

Other things

  • observed my first bit of user research on something I'd designed
  • spent some time merging some Dependabot PRs (pull requests)
  • our new product manager started
  • I've booked my first work trip to visit the NHS England offices in Canary Wharf

A small cove at dusk. The land is dark but the sea and sky are still bright. The horizon has some orange tones from the setting sun which is out of sight.
